Experience the Original River City

Last Updated 3/8/2026Posted in Trip Ideas

Long before audiences across America were singing “76 Trombones,” Mason City was the real-life inspiration behind Meredith Willson’s beloved musical The Music Man. Today, visitors can step into that story and experience why Mason City proudly calls itself The Original River City.

Begin your journey at The Music Man Square, a must-see attraction featuring a stunning 1912 streetscape, a recreation of the Warner Bros. movie set from the 1962 film. Wander past storefronts reminiscent of River City, grab a sweet treat at the vintage Candy Kitchen ice cream parlor, and browse Mrs. Paroo’s Gift Shop for the perfect River City souvenir.

Just a few steps away is the Meredith Willson Boyhood Home, where the famed composer grew up and first discovered his love of music. Step outside and explore the surrounding neighborhood, where a number of beautiful Queen Anne and Prairie-style homes are featured on the Architectural & Historic Walking Tour. Follow the route to the picturesque Meredith Willson Footbridge, a charming spot that celebrates the composer’s legacy and connection to the community.

For more cultural discoveries, visit the Charles H. MacNider Art Museum, home to an impressive collection of American art and the beloved works of puppet master Bil Baird, whose artistry was featured in The Sound of Music and other productions.

Continue your stroll to the new Mason City Riverwalk, a vibrant public space inspired by the community’s love for arts, culture, and nature. Designed with elements of music and architecture woven throughout, the Riverwalk offers a scenic place to relax, explore, and enjoy the creative spirit of River City.

And the music story continues just a few miles away in nearby Clear Lake at the legendary Surf Ballroom and Music Experience Center, where music icons once performed and where rock ’n’ roll history lives on.

From Broadway inspiration to legendary music venues, Mason City invites visitors to experience the places that inspired River City—and the stories that continue to shape it today.
