By day, the pathway invites leisurely strolls through thoughtfully designed walkways and native landscaping - prairie grasses, perennials, and symbolic ginkgo trees that reflect the city's heritage and Prairie School roots. Public art installations and rotating sculptures line the route, creating a vibrant outdoor gallery that celebrates creativity in every season.
As evening falls, Harmony in Light glows softly at night - a warm welcome marking the gateway to the downtown district. Anchored by this striking stainless steel sculpture by HYBYCOZO Studios, the plaza's design echoes the rhythm of music and the flow of water, capturing the creative spirit that defines Mason City.

In June 2025, a long-held dream became reality in the heart of Mason City with the opening of the downtown Riverwalk District and Waterfront Plaza — a transformational project decades in the making.
Known affectionately as "River City" thanks to Meredith Willson’s The Music Man, Mason City has long embraced its ties to music, culture, and natural beauty. Now, that legacy takes center stage with the completion of a stunning new public space that honors our heritage while embracing a bold, creative future.
Set along Willow Creek near the confluence of the Winnebago River, the Riverwalk District is more than a scenic pathway — it’s a celebration of Mason City’s soul. At its centerpiece stands Harmony in Light, a breathtaking cylindrical sculpture by internationally acclaimed artists Serge Beaulieu and Yelena Filipchuk of HYBYCOZO Studios. This intricate work of laser-cut stainless steel fuses classic Prairie School patterns with a contemporary twist, casting enchanting shadows during the day and glowing softly at night.
Inspired by the rhythm of a musical score, the plaza’s design reflects the flow of both water and melody. Even the walkway layout and landscaping follow a "song structure," complete with natural verses and visual choruses. Together, it creates an immersive experience that invites guests to not just walk through — but linger, explore, and be inspired.
The Riverwalk isn’t just a path; it’s a gateway. Situated at the south end of the Southbridge Mall parking lot, the plaza greets travelers entering Mason City from the south on Highway 65. With an adjacent playground, textured concrete patterns, and vibrant sculptures like the iconic Spiral Dance, this space guides visitors into the heart of downtown with beauty, intention, and creativity.
Carefully curated landscaping highlights Mason City’s connection to the land. Native prairie grasses, blooming perennials, and willow trees—indigenous to Willow Creek—surround the trail. Ginkgo trees, a nod to Frank Lloyd Wright and his architectural legacy in Mason City, offer a striking visual link to the Historic Park Inn just north of the site.
From dusk to dawn, the riverwalk is designed to be safe, welcoming, and accessible for all. It joins the newly constructed High Line Trail, the Destination Iowa Bike Park, and more than 20 miles of connected trails that encompass over 600 acres of parkland. It’s a network that promotes health, recreation, and exploration — all while showcasing the region’s natural and cultural vibrancy.
The River City Riverwalk is also a stage for art. Permanent pieces like the sculpture, tuning forks, and rotating installations from the River City Sculptures on Parade line the path, turning a casual stroll into a walk-through gallery. These pieces, both playful and profound, invite creativity and spark conversation, reinforcing the idea that public art should be for everyone.
As artist Serge Beaulieu shares, “The goal of our artwork is to foster welcoming and meaningful gathering spaces for the community.” This new district does just that — and more. It reminds us that everyone carries a light inside, and together we can illuminate a brighter future.
This ambitious project was made possible through a combination of Destination Iowa grant funding, local option sales tax, private donations, and support from the City’s annual capital improvement plan. Designed by Bergland + Cram, engineered by WHKS, and guided by the creative vision of Confluence, the Riverwalk District is a point of pride for Mason City — and a sign of what’s yet to come.
