NOW OPEN: The Immersive Surf Ballroom Experience

Last Updated 9/19/2025Posted in What's New Spotlight

The musical heritage of North Iowa has been amplified. The Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa recently rolled out the red carpet for the opening of the new Surf Ballroom Music Experience Center (MEC) – a new immersive musical experience to complement The Surf Ballroom.

As you step into the Center, you are greeted by nods of music from guitars holding velvet ropes, to instruments played by Willie Nelson, Gene Simmons, Buddy Holly, Miranda Lambert, and various other talented musicians. Pose for a photo with cutouts of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J. P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson. Take your time and explore the exhibits as an intro to the immersive space.

The exhibit, titled “Not Fade Away: The Surf Ballroom Immersive Experience”, is a transformative, layered adventure through the birth of rock ‘n’ roll and the timeless sound that changed American music forever. Historic artifacts, restored audio, and original archive materials come to life through immersive digital storytelling and a 360-degree experience.

Watch as the rich history of The Surf Ballroom’s beginnings and tragic fire is told in a 4D-like experience. Learn and hear the stories of The Day Music Died. When the video exhibit comes to an end, further exploration of the exhibit is encouraged by touching the projections on the walls of each genre to hear an artist and their story. Look down at your feet, and as you walk, musical notes follow you.

As you exit the exhibit, learn about Les Paul’s guitar inventions and see Slash’s hat and guitar. Follow the path upstairs and you’ll be greeted by the new event venue and practice rooms for musicians of all ages to brush up on their skills. The upstairs lounge - The Palms Rooftop Cabana – is sure to become a hot spot for drinks and a beautiful overlook of Clear Lake.
