What Your Purchase Supports: The Mason City Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) is a volunteer advisory body made up of seven community members appointed by the Mayor and approved by the City Council to four-year terms. As Mason City’s local preservation commission, the HPC:
- Identifies and studies historic buildings, sites, and districts in the community
- Recommends local historic designations and supports nominations to the National Register of Historic Places.
- Reviews exterior work in the Z5 Central Business zoning district and issues Certificates of Appropriateness, using the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation as its guide
- Educates and engages the public on the benefits of historic preservation and the value of Mason City’s architectural legacy.
The Commission’s recent and ongoing initiatives include public education efforts, collaborative work with local partners on key historic properties, and projects like the downtown intensive-level survey, which will help shape the future of the Mason City Downtown Historic District.
