Mason City is now home to an exciting collection of singletrack mountain bike trails designed for riders of all skill levels. Developed by Rock Solid Trail Contracting, LLC, the Prairie Rock Trails are perfect for adventure-seekers, cyclists, and outdoor enthusiasts alike. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced rider, these trails offer something for everyone, with five miles of new trails, two pump tracks, and the new Prairie Rock Trails Bike Park. Each trail has been thoughtfully positioned to highlight the community’s natural beauty while helping Mason City establish itself as a premier destination for outdoor recreation.
The Prairie Rock Trails project was born from Mason City’s bold vision to establish one of Iowa’s premier mountain biking destinations—an amenity that would elevate outdoor recreation, attract visitors, and enhance quality of life for residents. What began as a stretch of undeveloped land, including a former industrial site, has now been transformed into a world-class trail system and bike park that is drawing attention from riders across the Midwest and beyond.
At the heart of this project is the development of Mason City’s growing singletrack network—the gold standard of modern mountain biking. Designed for flow, challenge, and adventure, these natural-surface trails allow riders to experience the landscape in an immersive, exhilarating way.
The growth of Prairie Rock Trails is part of a massive community-wide expansion of outdoor recreation opportunities. This trail network is intentionally designed to connect Mason City residents, visitors, and bicycle enthusiasts to important destinations throughout the city as well as nearby parks, natural areas, and recreational assets. Once fully realized, the PRT system will link more than 20 miles of trails and over 600 acres of parks, creating seamless connectivity from downtown to the outdoors—and directly to the new Prairie Rock Trails Bike Park.
Together, these investments represent a transformative moment for Mason City. Prairie Rock Trails is not only reshaping the region’s recreational landscape, but also redefining what’s possible in a community where adventure, nature, and innovation come together.
