History

Founded in 2025

The Prairie Rock Trails project grew out of Mason City’s vision to establish a premier mountain biking destination in Iowa. What was once undeveloped land — including a former industrial site — has been transformed into a world-class facility that celebrates the region’s outdoor recreation opportunities and attracts riders from near and far.

Located at 1500 Elm Drive adjacent to the scenic Lime Creek Conservation Area, the Prairie Rock Trails Bike Park was made possible through a Destination Iowa Grant — a statewide initiative aimed at boosting tourism, outdoor recreation, and community investment.

The park’s design and construction were led by Rock Solid Trail Contracting, LLC, a nationally recognized trail builder known for crafting engaging terrain for riders of all abilities. The completed bike park includes a diverse mix of pump tracks, jump features, wood obstacles, and progressive single-track routes, all set within more than 10 acres of riding space with 5+ miles of built single-track trail options.

In addition to the destination bike park itself, Mason City has developed an expansive collection of single-track mountain bike trails throughout the area, designed to highlight the natural landscape and provide engaging experiences for beginners through advanced riders. These trails — such as The Rapids, Evans Preserve, Riverhawk, and Little Riverhawk — form a growing network that connects riders to the broader outdoor offerings in and around Mason City.

Since the park’s soft opening in November 2025, Prairie Rock Trails has become an exciting new chapter in Mason City’s outdoor recreation story, reinforcing its reputation as a hub for adventure cycling and community pride — with a larger grand opening and dedication planned for Spring 2026.
