Cheers to 40 Years of Tourism in Mason City
What a night to remember! On November 6, 2025, our community came together to celebrate a milestone that’s been four decades in the making — 40 years of Visit Mason City and the incredible people, projects, and partnerships that have shaped our story. From preserving our architectural treasures to building bold new destinations, Mason City’s tourism journey is filled with creativity, collaboration, and community pride. Our 40th Anniversary Annual Meeting was all about reflecting on that journey — and looking ahead to what’s next.
Reflecting on 40 Years
Over the years, Mason City has grown from a hidden gem into a destination that surprises visitors in the very best way.
Each chapter — from the restoration of the Historic Park Inn to the creation of The Music Man Square and the preservation of the Stockman House — has built momentum and deepened pride in who we are.
To celebrate those stories, we welcomed a panel of local tourism champions to share their reflections and experiences. Each brought a unique perspective on how far we’ve come — and where we’re headed next.
- Peggy Bang – A lifelong advocate for preservation and architectural heritage, Peggy reminded us how vital it is to protect the spaces that make Mason City so distinctive.
- Scott Moorman – A downtown business owner and Main Street Mason City program pioneer, Scott reflected on the entrepreneurial energy that drives Mason City’s progress and community spirit.
- Mayor Bill Schickel – Our longest-serving mayor, Mayor Schickel shared stories of optimism, collaboration, and the importance of shining a light on what makes Mason City great.
- Matt Curtis – A small business owner, community leader, and outdoor recreation advocate, Matt celebrated the growing role of trails, cycling, and outdoor adventure in Mason City’s tourism story.
Their stories reminded us that tourism isn’t just about attractions — it’s about people who believe in possibility, take risks, and turn bold ideas into reality.
A Year of Change, Growth, and Momentum
This past year marked a major turning point for Visit Mason City. We refreshed our brand identity, launched a brand-new website, and relocated our Welcome Center to the heart of downtown — all while continuing to welcome visitors, host events, and share Mason City’s story far and wide.
Tourism in Cerro Gordo County generated more than $145 million in 2025, with Visit Mason City supporting 182 large group events and driving an estimated $16.1 million in economic impact for our community.
We also celebrated exciting new developments — including the Murphy Park Bridge, River City Riverwalk & Waterfront Plaza, and Phase 1 of the Prairie Rock Trails. Each of these projects adds new experiences for visitors and residents alike, helping Mason City continue to evolve as a vibrant, active, and creative destination.

Here’s to our world-renowned architecture.
Here’s to our music and creativity.
Here’s to 600+ acres of parks, 20+ miles of trails, and a landscape built for adventure.
Here’s to a community that honors its history while building boldly toward its future.
Tourism doesn’t just happen here — it happens because of Mason City. Because of the dreamers, the doers, and the difference-makers who love this place and continue to share it with the world.
Here’s to the next chapter — and to continuing to Love Where You Live.
