Discover Mason City’s Outdoor Adventures

Last Updated 9/9/2025Posted in What's New Spotlight

Mason City, Iowa, is on the rise to becoming one of the Midwest’s hidden gems for outdoor recreation. With trails, bridges, and riverfront spaces opening in 2025-2026, now is the perfect time to plan your trip and experience the city’s fresh mix of adventure and charm.

Start your journey at the freshly opened Prairie Rock Trails Bike Park, a destination designed for
riders of all levels. Just a short hike from Lime Creek Conservation Area, via the Zerble Trail. This ten-acre park is packed with more than five miles of single-track trails, a paved pump track and a kiddy track. Mason City’s Prairie Rock Trails are designed for riders of all skill levels. Beginners can ease into adventure on The Rapids. While more seasoned bikers can test their skills at Evans Preserve, a section filled with jumps, drops, and rock features that’s been called a mountain biker’s playground.

Even if biking isn’t your thing, the park has picnic spots, artful touches, and plenty of space to relax while watching the action.

For a slower pace, head to Murphy Park. The 240-foot pedestrian bridge stretches across the Winnebago River, offering a stunning backdrop day or night. Whether you’re walking, biking with family, or simply stopping to take in the scenery, this picturesque spot never disappoints. The bridge also connects key trails, making it easy to link up different parts of the city without ever getting in the car.

No visit would be complete without exploring the Riverwalk District and Waterfront Plaza. Following the curves of Willow Creek, the Riverwalk combines art and nature into a lively gathering place. Its crown jewel, the “Harmony in Light” sculpture, glows beautifully after sunset. The moonlit sky and welcoming lights make the plaza a perfect evening stop. With nearby restaurants, shops, and cultural attractions, it’s easy to spend an entire day downtown and still find more to discover.

Whether you’re chasing thrills on two wheels, wanting a paddle on a water, savoring a riverside walk, or enjoying public art under the stars, Mason City’s outdoor spaces offer something for every traveler. Come for the nature, stay for the community, and leave with a fresh perspective on this welcoming Iowa gem.
